Rupert has developed extensive knowledge of the Civil Codes and corporate and insolvency laws of a number of CIS/FSU countries (Ukraine; Kazakhstan; Russia; Belarus). As a result, he has a sophisticated understanding of their application in commercial and civil fraud disputes before the English courts and in international arbitrations. A number of Rupert’s cases have involved the application of local law on: limitation (including the commencement, suspension and recommencement of the limitation period); contractual interpretation; setting aside transactions for want of corporate approval; directors’ and agents’ duties; shareholder rights; delict, unfounded enrichment, abuse of rights (particularly in the context of fraud and conspiracy claims); creditors’ rights; and the proprietorial rights of spouses. Rupert has substantial experience of working with local law experts in relation to the preparation of complex expert evidence and in cross-examining opposing experts on local law issues.

As a result, he has been recommended as “excellent for CIS work”and “a good choice for cases in need of a cerebral CIS expert”.  He is also regularly instructed to provide expert opinions on English law issues for use in CIS court proceedings.
