John Mehrzad QC successful for international referee before Court of Arbitration for Sport

John Mehrzad QC, acting as a member of the CAS advocates panel, successfully represented Christophe Lecourt in English and French before the Court of Arbitration for Sport, Lausanne, in an appeal against M. Lecourt’s non-selection as an international referee by the European Volleyball Federation, purportedly due to level of his Body Mass Index and abdominal circumference.

The Arbitral Award determined that the Federation had wrongly equated those measurements as automatically disqualifying M. Lecourt from refereeing at international tournaments when the applicable medical evidence provided under the relevant regulations stated that M. Lecourt was fit and able to referee.

As a result, the decision of the European Volleyball Federation’s Appeal Panel was set aside and annulled with the costs of the arbitration and M. Lecourt’s expenses ordered to be payable by the Federation.

A copy of the Arbitral Award is here.

This is the latest case in which the Head of Littleton’s Sports Law Group, John Mehrzad QC, has successfully represented clients in sports arbitrations domestically and abroad.
